The Tutor House of Lords Book 2 edition by Meg Brooke Romance eBooks
When I read the first House of Lords book, The Secretary (House of Lords), I became enthralled with the world Meg Brooke created using real events, real facts, and very real feeling situations. She gave us a heroine that could stand on her own but was not so foolhardy in her own feminism to deny herself one of the basic human emotions; Love. I expected The Tutor to be just as well written and have as much thought and detail placed into the story to make the era come to life and the situations seem real, but Meg Brooke outdid herself. The Tutor has the same flair as Brooke's other works, but Cynthia is so much more complex in her nature, her resolve, and her past that you immediately feel for her and want to see how she will overcome the obstacles in her life. Add a dash of a somewhat "wild" duke and some social disgrace, and you have a chase between these two characters that has more passion than Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth, more reality than Edward and Elinor, and more back and forth fun than Emma and Mr. Knightley. The steamy scenes are masterfully placed after building up the relationship that you at once feel relief and want more.
Brooke continues to be a breath of fresh air in the romance genre, giving readers something smart, fun, and deeper than any of the other fluff I have read.

The Tutor House of Lords Book 2 edition by Meg Brooke Romance eBooks Reviews
YES!!! Finally in paperback. I love this series. It's the perfect mix of history, intrigue, and romance. This is my favorite of the series, not only for the heroine, but the love interest.
In the book, The Tutor (House of Lords) by Meg Brooke we meet Cynthia Endersby. She is a complex and intelligent woman. She is not like other women of her time in Historical English high society. She is a woman with secrets and a rich internal dialogue that I never got bored of through out the story.
Charles Bainbridge, the new Duke of Danforth is suddenly one of the most powerful men in the country. He was the heir so it wasn't a total surprise, but his father's sudden death placed him in power before he had prepared for it. He has the best intentions for politics, he just doesn't know how it works or how he can make changes. That is how Miss Cynthia Endersby comes into the story. She has already been 'tutoring' the high born ladies to become more then light fluff on the arm of their noble husbands, so why not a Duke?
For once there was a believable rejection of marriage to the Duke. Seriously, no one would say no because it is too powerful, rich, etc. But Cynthia has a good reason to not get married and I totally back her up in her spiteful actions. I liked Cynthia. She was never silly. Instead she is a tough survivor that is smart and wily. There is a mystery, but it wasn't what I thought it was, so that was also a nice surprise about this story.
I didn't notice that I had already read the book preceding thisThe Secretary (House of Lords)
(Clarissa's story). I really preferred this story. Both were well edited with a decent story about a social human experiment on two girls with some tasty romance without ever becoming vulgar.
Excellent read! I read this for a book club and it was perfect!
Very little sex, but a lot of story. Endersby was horrible to little Cynthia as she grew, but he didn't tarnish her spirit.
Second book in series , strong main characters and serious issues explored. Personally I wish the sex scenes were less.
Refreshingly different!
Cynthia, and her friend Clarissa (whose story is told in the book The Secretary) were rasied together as best friends, surrogate sisters and neighbors until their fathers had a falling out.
Cynthia's father raised her in a far more educated fashion than young women of her day were - mathematics, sciences, politics, philosophy, etc. He expects her unique intellect and education as well as her beauty to gain *him* influence over a powerful high status man, and is overbearingly pushing Cynthia to marry for power and status.
Cynthia, on the other hand, has other plans. She has been setting aside money to support herself when she escapes her father by tutoring empty-headed society women to hold their own in intelligent conversation so they don't embarrass their powerful, high status husbands or husbands-to-be.
One of her clients refers her to the brother of a friend - this brother having never dreamt he'd inherit his father's title but does when his father dies prematurely. This propels the young man into Parliament, and he's utterly and completely clueless about politics or the issues of the day. Cynthia's job is to bring him up to snuff in very short order and on the very quiet. One thing leads to another and romance is a big factor, but not in the usual style.
Cynthia's father is a real piece of work - there is some *gasp* horrific parental attitudes and behaviors. Cynthia is a strong-minded and strong-willed young woman. This is not the typical Regency Romance formula book. It's refreshingly different and I enjoyed it, even though there were some darkish things along the way.
I enjoyed this book. The heroine had been part of her father's great experiment. He wanted to see what would happen if a child was raised in a manner different than that of normal English society, and raising a female with that in mind made the experiment even more interesting. But -- he wasn't her father. He had purchased two female babies from a brothel. He kept one and gave the other to a friend. The two young girls became best friends. While the heroine was raised in a cold, clinical environment her friend was loved.
The heroine secretly coached ladies who married well, particularly if a woman married a man involved in politics. She is asked to teach a man who is now a duke.
The duke is the hero. He has his own family skeletons and has a rakish reputation. He is able to see the intelligence and kindness behind her beautiful appearance. She discovers he isn't what his reputation says he is.
But the heroine doesn't want to make her "father's" wish to come true. Somewhere along the line the experiment became the quest for power. Marrying a duke would be a huge step in that direction.
Good story.
